FAQs

What is the difference between modems, routers and gateways?2025-02-03T15:49:10+01:00

Modems, routers and gateways are all devices for data communication, but have different tasks and areas of application.

  • Modems:
A modem (modulator-demodulator) is a device that converts analog signals into digital signals and vice versa. It establishes the connection between your local network and the Internet, e.g. via DSL, cable or mobile networks. Modems are purely responsible for transmitting data without forwarding or processing it.
  • Routers:
Routers forward data packets between networks. They connect local networks (LAN) with external networks (e.g. the Internet) and distribute the data within the network. A router can often connect several devices to the Internet at the same time and often has functions such as a firewall or WLAN.
  • Gateways:
A gateway connects two different networks or protocols that are not normally directly compatible with each other. In industry, for example, a gateway is used to connect devices with different communication protocols such as Modbus, CAN bus or OPC UA. It can also offer additional functions such as data conversion, protocol translation and edge-based data processing.
What are the differences in the RF frequency range between Europe and America?2025-02-03T15:54:04+01:00

The RF frequency range differs between Europe and America due to different regulatory requirements:

  • Europe:
In Europe, frequency bands such as the 868 MHz band and the 2.4 GHz band are approved for industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) applications. The 868 MHz band offers greater range with low power consumption, but is limited in bandwidth.
  • America:
In the USA, the 915 MHz band and the 2.4 GHz band are predominantly used. The 915 MHz band allows a higher bandwidth than the European 868 MHz band, but at the expense of a slightly shorter range.

The globally available 2.4 GHz band is suitable for applications that require global connectivity, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Companies must ensure that their devices meet the relevant frequency requirements and regulatory standards of the respective region.

Which industries benefit from embedded modules?2025-02-03T15:59:07+01:00

Many industries benefit from the versatility and reliability of embedded modules:

  • Industrial automation:
For controlling and monitoring machines and optimizing production processes.
  • Smart cities:
For applications such as intelligent street lighting, parking systems or environmental monitoring.
  • Energy and utilities:
For monitoring energy networks, remote maintenance of systems and smart metering.
  • Healthcare:
For networking medical devices and supporting telemedicine applications.
  • Transportation and logistics:
For fleet management, real-time tracking and the networking of vehicles.

Thanks to their flexibility and scalability, embedded modules are a key component in almost all IoT scenarios.

What form factors are available for the Digi XBee wireless modules?2025-02-03T16:04:12+01:00

Digi XBee wireless modules are available in three different form factors, which vary depending on the application and installation requirements:

  • Through-Hole (24.38mm x 27.61mm):
This form factor is the standard for all Digi XBee variants and offers easy installation on PCBs. It is ideal for prototypes and low-volume applications.
  • Surface mount (21.99mm x 34mm):
The SMT variant is specially designed to meet the requirements of high-volume manufacturing. It enables space-saving assembly and offers automated assembly in series production.
  • Micro (13mm x 19mm):
The Micro version is particularly compact and optimized for portable and space-critical applications. It is suitable for wearables, sensors and other devices where size is critical.

This variety of form factors ensures flexibility for a wide range of development and production requirements.
